Furniture for a wildlife rehabilitation centre answers to a different brief than furniture for people. Scale, weight, and durability matter more than styling, but the pieces still have to sit comfortably in a landscape rather than read as infrastructure. At Vantara, the elephant water bowls were designed around exactly that balance deep, wide-mouthed basins cast large enough to serve an elephant's daily water needs, finished with the kind of detailing usually reserved for ornamental garden pieces.
Casting at this scale changes the engineering problem. A bowl built to hold and withstand repeated contact from an animal many times heavier than typical outdoor furniture needs a thick, evenly distributed wall section and a stable base that won't shift or crack under sustained load requirements a hand-built or fabricated alternative would struggle to meet consistently across multiple units. Casting each bowl as a single piece, footed on a fluted plinth, gave the units the mass and stability the brief demanded while keeping a proportioned, classical silhouette rather than a purely utilitarian trough.
The warm yellow, sandstone-like finish was chosen to sit naturally against Vantara's open, semi-wild landscape rather than announce itself as built material. Smooth to the touch but not stark, it reads closer to carved stone than cast concrete appropriate for a setting where the animals, not the objects around them, are meant to hold attention.
