Every company has a first project, the one where an idea on paper becomes something people actually walk past, sit on, and touch. For The Concrete SHOP, a design and manufacturing company, this courtyard in Ahmedabad was that project.

Before there was a portfolio, there was this brief: design and manufacture the landscape elements for a residential courtyard, and make them feel like they belong to the ground they stand on. Wide teal-rimmed planters were shaped to sit atop mosaic-tiled platforms, their curved yellow bodies painted with fine floral vine work. Each one holds a neatly rounded shrub, echoing the circular geometry of the sunburst petal pattern tiled into the platform beneath it.

Nearby, a cluster of cube-shaped benches surrounds a central sculpture, forming a natural gathering point. Every block carries a hand-drawn lotus motif in warm terracotta, paired with dark wood-toned decking, simple in form but rich in detail up close. Along the planted borders, tall cylindrical planters rise among the greenery, their surfaces carved with paisley and mandala patterns that catch the light as the eye moves through the space.

With no prior project to lean on, every standard had to be set from scratch. What pattern to hand paint and how precisely to repeat it. How a mosaic should be laid so it holds its form outdoors. How a curve on one planter should match the next, so the set reads as one considered whole rather than a collection of separate objects. Those early decisions became the working principles The Concrete SHOP has carried into every project manufactured since.

The result is a courtyard that residents pass through every day and occasionally stop in. Shaded seating near the sculpture, planters that soften the hardscape, and a palette of yellow, terracotta, and teal that stands out against the surrounding brick without overwhelming it.

This is where it started. And the standard set here, that even the most everyday elements of a space, a bench, a planter, a bit of greenery, deserve real design and manufacturing intention, is the one we have held to at every scale since.
