A public garden bench has to hold two things at once enough presence to read as a piece of landscape design in its own right, and enough restraint to sit comfortably among planting rather than compete with it. At Torrent Garden, landscape architect Aniket Bhagwat's seating answers that brief with a single sculptural form: an angular, wedge-legged bench cast entirely in grey terrazzo.
The geometry is doing more work than it first appears to. Rather than resting on straight vertical supports, the bench's legs taper and splay outward, giving the piece a sense of lift and movement even at rest a detail only achievable because the bench is cast as a monolithic form rather than assembled from separate seat, back, and leg components. That single-pour approach also means the terrazzo's aggregate finish runs continuously across every surface and angle, with no visible joints breaking the material's texture as light moves across it through the day.
Terrazzo's speckled grey finish was the right choice for a garden setting on both counts that mattered here durability and visual quiet. It withstands sustained outdoor exposure and daily public use without the surface wear that timber or painted finishes show over time, while its fine, non-uniform texture keeps the bench from reading as a stark or overly polished object against the greenery surrounding it. The result is a piece of furniture built to anchor a garden space quietly, holding its own as design without asking visitors to notice it as such.
