When the Jain Vidhya Shala Trust set out to restore the character of their institutional building in Ahmedabad, the brief was clear: honor the intricate craftsmanship of traditional Gujarati architecture without the weight, cost, and maintenance burden of natural stone.
The building's facade called for ornate jaali screens, decorative brackets, and heritage style balustrades spanning multiple floors, the kind of detailing seen in old havelis and religious institutions across the region. Recreating this in stone would have meant heavier structural loads, longer timelines, and a far higher cost. That is where GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) became the natural choice.
The Concrete SHOP® was brought on as the installer for this project, tasked with fabricating and fitting a full heritage style railing and screen system across the facade, including delicately patterned jaali panels, carved brackets under each balcony, and decorative balustrades that echo the ornamentation of classical Rajasthani and Gujarati design.
Every panel was cast to replicate the fine lattice work traditionally carved by hand, achieving the same visual depth and shadow play while being significantly lighter, more durable, and weather resistant. This made it possible to install the intricate detailing across every level of the building without compromising structural integrity or blowing the project timeline.
The result is a facade that stands true to the trust's vision, a building that feels timeless and rooted in tradition, while quietly benefiting from the strength and longevity of modern GFRC technology.
Completed in 2021, this project remains a strong example of how heritage aesthetics and contemporary material science can work together, giving institutions like the Jain Vidhya Shala Trust a facade that will age gracefully for decades to come.
